about me...

Nicole Martens is a graphic designer with a passion and interest for miscellaneous artistic, cultural and science-like phenomena and activities.

Born in Utrecht, NL, Martens studied Graphic and Audiovisual Design at the Willem de Kooning Academie Rotterdam, where she graduated Cum Laude in 2005.

Her work is about chaos and structure; how to capture information in an inspiring and challenging grid. She doesn't shy away from tackling existing systems and in the process creating new ones. With or without concept, conventions are always questioned. Change is a good thing, especially when it confronts the user and audience; it grabs their attention and keeps them focussed.
Her designs are characterized by her refined use of color combinations, the formation of abstract figures and elegant typography.

The tense and dependent relationship between Nature and Culture; Emotion and Ratio; Evolution and Creation are important themes in her work. As a human being, designer and artist she tries to achieve a harmonious whole.

She positions herself between art and design and explores new areas within given contexts; using a varied array of media to tell her story.
